The Institute: Shanghai <=> Berlin

The era of scientific pathology started in 1831 at the Charité, Germany, with the appointment of Rudolf Virchow (1821-1902) as professor of Pathological Anatomy.

Since then the Institute of Pathology of the Charité was continuously one of the most famous institutes around Europe and beyond. During the last 22 years Prof. Manfred Dietel served as director transforming the institute into a modern institution with surgical (histo-)pathology, immune-pathology and molecular pathology on an high international level. Furthermore, tissue-based research in oncology, infectious diseases, hereditary abnormalities and many other fields was established. Finally, a Tele-Pathology Consultation Center was set up, connecting Berlin with the global pathology expert network of the UICC (International Union Against Cancer).

The Charité-Institute now is the partner of the newly established Virchow Laboratories – Institute of Pathology, Shanghai EAST Hospital - Tongji University of which Prof. Dietel is the German director and advisor. By this, the longstanding experiences of the Charité-Pathology is now also available for the Shanghai Pathology  including daily telepathology consultations if appropriate.
